2013 Distinguished Staff Members
Nanette Johnson, Distinguished Staff Member
From her work with the award-winning Seriously Creative marketing campaign to her reputation as a can-do customer resource, Nanette never lets a burdensome workload get in the way of quality results. Despite numerous commitments, Nanette has been known to assist others with Adobe projects that are unrelated to her own responsibilities. Her work can be seen across campus, from logos, signage, and annual reports to Admissions brochures – beautiful creations that touch our community without much thought by recipients about who created them.
Brady Buresh, Unsung Hero
Going above and beyond the call of duty is a daily occurrence for Brady. His customer service is outstanding. His work ethic is incredible. Both internal and external constituents benefit from his attention to detail and his enthusiasm for his job. He is one of a kind and will always do whatever it takes to get the job done - correctly, and with a smile. He truly epitomizes what it means to be a Bulldog!
Tim Buckner, Distinguished Community Service
Through his involvement with TC Roberson’s Scout Troup 85, Tim helped to start and currently advises Venture Crew 891 for young men with special needs. Participants in this group work on projects that help them develop an identity that is separate from their circumstances and allows them to participate as a valued member of the community. For his work in this project and his long-time involvement in Special Olympics, Tim Buckner truly deserves this award.
Kim Kessaris, Outstanding Contribution to Diversity
Through her involvement in AVID, our signature partnership program with Asheville City Schools, this award recipient helps to match 80 UNC Asheville tutors with 250 students in grades 6 through 12. These students in largely underrepresented groups gain the confidence and knowledge to become first generation college students.
Stephanie Franklin, Outstanding Manager/Supervisor
Stephanie consistently goes above and beyond to create a wonderful learning and work environment. She collaborates across departments and divisions to create intentional and meaningful programs for all students and families – a feat not for the weak of heart. She does this as the only full-time staff member of the department and is a true leader in her vision for the programs she manages. From creating orientation programs, including pre-rendezblue and rendezblue, to creating family programs such as parent embark and Family Weekend - while still engaging transition students and employees - Stephanie Franklin is certainly a Rock Star!
Scott Walker, Outstanding Professional
Scott has been taking the lead on several renovations across campus. On his own initiative, he developed “mini movies” to show his “customers” what proposed renovations will look like. This extra initiative has taken the renovation process to the next level for our customers. Also, during Ed Oskins’ recent military deployment, Scott served admirably as both the Facilities Planner and the Trades supervisor.
Pat Odnakk, Outstanding Administrative Support Employee
Pat has an integral role in the work she does representing the division of Student Affairs. She played a critical role over the past year in providing leadership and support for the National Parents Council, Convocation, and the Commencement Rehearsal Breakfast. In addition to these accomplishments, Pat's warm smile and helpful nature make her a perfect recipieint of this award.
Anthony Delaurentis, Outstanding Trades and Service Maintenance Employee
Anthony is a well-rounded, extremely talented technician and electrician. He pro-actively seeks to improve work-related processes. He constantly reviews campus lighting for effectiveness and safety and is pro-active in his professional development. He is always looking out for the safety of students, faculty and staff.

They are on-call often, many times receiving the call in the middle of the night to assist in a situation that is challenging, requiring quick thoughts and action, and they have never been known to complain. They care about the student experience and know that their investment in the moment will assist in continued development and growth in the students.
