Excellence in Leadership

Your Leadership Role

As a supervisor, you have a myriad of responsibilities. You are a performance coach, a planner, an advocate and a catalyst who sparks action in others.  Your destination is success in meeting your department’s goals, and EXCELL is your guide for getting you there. Whether you’re a new leader, a leader new to State government, or an aspiring leader, EXCELL is your roadmap for success.

EXCELL Certificate Program

Managers and Supervisors who complete the four required courses and at least four electives will receive EXCELL Certification from UNC Asheville. Graduates from the program will receive a certificate and special recognition by the Chancellor at a campus community event. Since Career Banding emphasizes the development of knowledge, skills and abilities, what better way is there to develop your core competencies in leadership and supervision?

Core Courses

All new managers and supervisors must complete the following four courses within one year of employment:

The Equal Employment Opportunity Institute (EEOI) presents the basics of employment and equal employment opportunity law, legal hiring and interviewing, and workplace diversity. Workplace Diversity is offered as part of EEOI or as a stand-alone, one-day course. Participants examine how inclusive practices promote employee morale and organizational success.

In Setting Performance Expectations, participants learn both procedural information and best practices for coaching and encouraging high levels of performance.

The Disciplinary Process course provides supervisors with a guide for navigating the policies and procedures for correcting and addressing on-going performance problems.

Elective Courses

Receive EXCELL Certification by completing at least four courses within two years.   You may choose from courses such as:

  • Coaching and Counseling for Excellence
  • Motivating Your Team
  • Being an Influential Leader
  • Keeping Your Valuable Talent
  • Adapting Your Leadership Approach

EXCELL Leadership Retreat

Beginning in 2012, EXCELL participants will have the opportunity to complete all four elective requirements by attending the EXCELL Leadership Retreat held during Spring Break.  Participants will experience Leadership: Great Leaders, Great Teams, Great Results™ for the Public Sector

More than just a training workshop, this 2.5 day intensive program helps your leaders discover how to inspire trust and build credibility with their people, define a clear and compelling purpose, create and align systems of success, and unleash the talents and energy of a winning team. Leaders spend their efforts creating a place where people want to stay and contribute their best effort, time and time again, helping your organization achieve its most critical priorities.
