Distinguished Staff Awards

Distinguished Staff Awards

Nominees and award winners will be recognized at the Giving Thanks Celebration on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

All nominations are due by Monday, October 16, 2017 for Senior Staff review and selection.

Four categories of individual awards:
• Don Locke Excellence in Diversity Award
• Spirit of Innovation Award
• Spirit of Sustainability Award
• Distinguished Staff Award for Excellence

Individual recipients receive a cash award of $1,000 (Gross).
All awards are subject to federal and state withholding tax.

One team award category:
• Distinguished Staff Team Award for Excellence

Recipients of the Team Award receive a cumulative cash reward of $3000 (Gross)
All awards are subject to federal and state withholding tax.

The team selected to receive the Distinguished Staff Team Award shares equally, and exclusively, among only the nominated team members.  For example, a four-member team would divide the award among the four people named in the nomination.  A “team” is defined as a permanent or project team consisting of 3-10 members who work together on a regular basis.

Distinguished Staff Award Eligibility

In order to be eligible for nomination, staff/team members must be regular, full-time, or part-time employees with at least one year of satisfactory performance and service to the University.

All nominations are due by Monday, October 16, 2017 for Senior Staff review and selection.

Distinguished Staff Award Criteria and Award Descriptions

General Criteria

Overall, award recipients will be selected on the merits and strengths of the following contributions:
•    Consistent demonstration of an outstanding or sustained commitment to inclusion, innovation, and/or sustainability.
•    Evidence of exceptional efforts to promote a University environment that supports the Strategic Plan.
•    Enhancing the quality of work life in ways that make a significant difference for colleagues and customers.
•    Providing outstanding and ongoing excellence in service to faculty, staff, students, community and/or other customers.
•    Building and strengthening alliances on and off campus, while representing the university in a positive manner.
•    Developing creative solutions to problems that result in significantly more effective and efficient department or university operations.

Don Locke Excellence in Diversity Award

Description: This award recognizes significant contributions by a staff member to the ideals of diversity and inclusion on campus.

Criteria for selection (cite one or more in the nomination):
1. Fostering a deep commitment to supporting diversity, and appropriately encouraging frank and honest conversation.
2. Demonstrating a sustained commitment to the advancement of cultural diversity and inclusion. This includes outstanding dedication and excellence, including regularly championing the ideals of and demonstrating behaviors reflecting diversity and inclusion.
3. Promoting and advocating for a campus environment that is welcoming.
4. Contributing to raising awareness on campus.
5. Having significant impact on the campus in terms of diversity and inclusion.

Spirit of Innovation Award

Description: This award recognizes significant contributions by a staff member who demonstrates a commitment to innovation including an openness to change and a willingness to do things differently, resourcefulness, or creativity.  This award recognizes innovations in processes, products, methods, or systems.

Criteria for selection (cite one or more in the nomination):
1. Enhancing the quality of new or current programs, processes, or services in an innovative manner, encouraging novel or diverse perspectives.
2. Developing imaginative ideas to drive the University forward; working to improve any area of the University’s operations; identifying creative solutions – large or small in scope – that have made a positive and significant difference.
3. Encouraging people to think of alternative ways of doing things by evaluating ideas/suggestions and encouraging reasonable/calculated risk-taking. Converted ideas from general concepts into action plans.
4. Working within constraints to create novel approaches; identifying ways to make the most out of existing resources.

Spirit of Sustainability Award

Description: This award recognizes significant contribution by a staff member to enhance the culture of sustainability on campus.

Criteria for selection (cite one or more in the nomination):
1. Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to sustainability and support of the natural environment, human communities, and the financial health of the institution.
2. Building and strengthening alliances of campus and beyond by encouraging active participation with community organizations and partners, promoting enduring alumni engagement, and facilitating inclusive discussions about a sustainable future.
3. Sustaining affordable higher education and continuing to identify new sources of support while also operating effectively and efficiently.
4. Demonstrating sustainable use of natural resources; documenting and communicating the environmental impacts of University practices; or developing innovative and effective departmental sustainability programs.

Two Distinguished Staff Awards for Service Excellence (One Individual and One Team Award)

Description: These awards recognize significant contributions by a staff member and a team in providing excellent service to the campus.

Criteria for selection (cite one or more in the nomination):
1. Providing outstanding and ongoing excellence in service or a special one-time contribution to the mission of the
department, division, or university.
2. Enhancing the quality of work life in ways that make a significant difference for colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and/or other customers.
3. Continually contributing to a respectful, diverse, and collaborative work environment.
