2021 State Health Plan Open Enrollment: October 15, 2020 through
October 31, 2020
UNC Asheville offers medical insurance through the North Carolina Blue Cross Blue Shield (NCBCBS) State Health Plan and supplemental insurance policies through the NC Flex Program.
This year, the open enrollment period for the 2020 North Carolina State Health Plan and NCFlex Benefits has been shortened to 17 days and begins on Oct. 15, 2020 and ends on Oct. 31, 2020.
- All employees and dependents enrolled in the State Health Plan will be moved to the 70/30 Plan effective January 1, 2021. If you want coverage under the 80/20 Plan, you must take action by going to the enrollment site and selecting the 80/20 Plan.
- If you want to reduce your employee-only monthly premium by $60 on either plan, you must take action by either attesting that you are NOT a tobacco user or agreeing to visit a CVS Minute Clinic for at least one tobacco cessation counseling session within before November 30, 2020. If you fail to take action, your monthly premiums will not be reduced by $60 in 2021. Print this page and provide it to your healthcare provider to ensure they bill your visit correctly.
More information about these and other important changes are described in the webinar link at the bottom of this page.

The Importance of Open Enrollment:
Open Enrollment is an opportunity to review your benefits to make sure your current elections still meet your needs and make any necessary changes. You may enroll or make changes for yourself and eligible dependents to all of your health insurance and NCFlex benefits beginning October 15 through October 31. Any additions and/or changes will be effective January 1, 2021.
Tobacco Attestation Credit: If you want to reduce your premium under the 70/30 Plan or 80/20 Plan, you MUST complete the tobacco attestation by November 30, 2020. If you attest you are a tobacco user and agree to visit a CVS MinuteClinic to satisfy your credit, you must fulfill that visit by November 30, 2020.
NCFlex: (dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, etc.) If you need to make changes to your NCFlex benefits or enroll/re-enroll in flexible spending accounts, action is required during the open enrollment period.
