Benefits Information and Enrollment

Blue Cross Blue Shield State Health Plan/NC Flex Plans

UNC Asheville offers medical insurance through the North Carolina Blue Cross Blue Shield (NCBCBS) State Health Plan and supplemental insurance policies through the NC Flex Program.

Generally, there are three times when you can enroll or make changes to your benefit elections:

  1. As a newly hired/eligible faculty or staff member
  2. After experiencing a qualifying life event
  3. During annual open enrollment

For health plans, you may enroll or make changes within 30 calendar days of eligibility or life event effective date. You may take up to 60 calendar days to choose a mandatory retirement plan. It is to your advantage to take prompt action to avoid large retroactive payroll deduction amounts.

Retirement

UNC Asheville employees have valuable opportunities to save for future retirement.

Mandatory Plans

Everyone’s financial goals, needs and savings strategies are different. Recognizing those differences, our employees may choose between two retirement programs for their mandatory retirement plan.

Participation in a mandatory retirement plan is required for permanent, probationary and time-limited employees who work at least ¾ time for nine months or more. Employees contribute 6% of their salaries toward the cost of their retirement. Eligible UNC Asheville employees must enroll in one of the two retirement plans offered:
