The Paid Parental Leave Policy provides eligible university employees dedicated leave time for care and bonding with a newborn or a child under the age of 18, newly placed for adoption, foster care, or other legal placement. Eligible employees who give birth will receive eight weeks of paid leave to recover from birth and to bond with and care for the child. Other eligible employees will receive four weeks of paid leave to bond with and care for the child.
In order to support new parents across our campus community, UNC Asheville implemented the new Paid Parental Leave benefit beginning January 1, 2020.

Coverage and Eligibility
An employee’s eligibility for Paid Parental Leave is based on the employee’s months of service and hours of work as of the date of the qualifying life event.
University staff who become a parent via childbirth, adoption, foster care or another legal placement are eligible if:
• The employee is full-time or part-time (half-time or more) in a permanent, probationary, or time-limited (benefits-eligible) staff position;
• The employee has been continuously employed by the State of North Carolina for the immediate 12 preceding months; and
• The employee has been in pay status for at least 1,040 hours in the previous 12-month period.
The Paid Parental Leave policy includes a provision for addressing qualifying events that occurred between September 1 through December 31, 2019. If a benefit eligible employee had a qualifying event that occurred on or after September 1, 2019, and met the eligibility requirements as of the date of the event, the employee will be eligible for 4 weeks of Paid Parental Leave for purposes of bonding, beginning January 1, 2020 and expiring 12 months from the date of the qualifying event.
Faculty are eligible for the Faculty Serious Illness and Disability Leave Program, which provides a comparable benefit to this Paid Parental Leave Program.
