NC 401(k) Plan

The NC 401(k) Plan is sponsored by the state of North Carolina, governed by the NC Department of the State Treasurer and administered by Prudential Retirement. The NC 401(k) Plan is a supplemental retirement program that allows employees to set aside payroll-deducted contributions on either a tax-deferred or after-tax (Roth) basis.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

Permanent full-time employees scheduled to work 30 or more hours per work week are eligible to participate.  Employees who are enrolled in either the TSERS or ORP mandatory retirement plan are eligible to participate in the NC 401(k) plan.

How Do I Enroll?

Eligible employees may enroll in the NC 401(k) plan at any time. Employees may obtain enrollment information by contacting the local NC 401(k) Prudential representative.  The representative can assist you with enrolling in the plan and answer any questions you may have about the plan.

How Does the Plan Work?

Your Supplemental Retirement Plan Decision Guide provides information (including a comparison chart) about all of the supplemental retirement plans available to eligible faculty and staff.

Contributions and Limits

For 2020, employees may contribute up to the following limits each calendar year via payroll deduction:

  • Up to age 49 – $19,500 per year
  • Age 50 or older – $26,000 per year

Note: Combined, 401(k) and 403(b) contributions cannot exceed the federal annual maximum contribution limit; however, additional contributions may be made to a 457(b) plan.
